Newport vs. Coeur D'Alene (ID) - Game Report

FACTORIA – In a fast-paced, physical game, the Newport Knights went on a scoring spree in the third period, and never looked back on the way to a 15-6 victory over the Coeur D’Alene Vikings.

It was Harrison Davies who opened up the scoring for the Vikings, with a clean right to left split, a minute and a half into the first quarter. Newport’s Zach Trimble buried 1 of his 5 goals on the evening 3 minutes later off a feed from Dalton Voeller. Goals from both squads put the game at a 2-2 tie heading into the second.

Bryce Hausmann got things started early in the second quarter for Newport, with a goal less than 30-seconds in, but it was the back-and-forth play that would be the story of the first half, with Ben Ellison answering for the Vikings, burying a beautiful feed on the crease from Gabe Johnson. Then, about 30-seconds later, Harrison Davies put his second in the back of the net with an absolute lazer from the top of the box to put Coeur D’Alene up 4-3 halfway through the second. Two goals from elusive Zach Trimble late in the quarter would send the teams into half with a score of 5-4, Newport.

Though the Vikings physical defensive play kept the Knights at bay for a majority of the game, it was Newport’s shot opportunities that would be the decisive factor, with the Knights putting up 3 in the third, including a 2-man advantage down-low finish from Weston Heuker. Newport’s patient and well-placed checks made it difficult for Coeur D’Alene to get accurate shots off, and as a result, the team was held to no goals in the third quarter.

The fourth wasn’t much different with the Knights putting in 8 goals, including a bar-down rip from Dalton Voeller off a tic-tac-toe fast break opportunity – 1 of his 3 goals on the night. The Vikings would get 2 in the fourth from Gabe Johnson and Chandler Johnson late in the match. Newport walked away with a well-played 15-6 victory to start off the season.

Newport (1-0) heads to Lake Washington (1-0) on March 17th, while Coeur D’Alene (0-1) hosts Lewis & Clark (0-0) on March 18th.
