Eastside Catholic Wins Shootout With Skyline 22-19

SAMMAMISH- The Eastside Catholic Crusaders and the Skyline Spartans, plateau neighbor clubs playied in perhaps the highest scoring high school game, a game with high scoring and minimal defense- "Shootout at the Sammamish Corral". In the first quarter, Crusader Mike Rambaldini dominated face-offs, both would be the thorn all night for the Spartans.  Skyline had the edge over the Crusaders 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.  In the second quarter both teams were firing, Skyline's defense foundered unable to stop one-on-one match ups and poor sliding packages.  Freshmen Colin MacIlvennie and Ross Komenda were blasting Skyline goalie Cory Larson.  Skyline's midfield horse Jack Pruitt and attackman Ryan Benz would keep the Spartans on the heel of the Crusaders.  At halftime the score was 10-9 Crusaders in the lead.  Skyline defensive slump would turn into a cliff in the second half.  Eastside's offense continued blasting Larson and dominating the face-offs.  The absence of Spartan long-stick midfielder Spencer Noonan was also felt, Rambaldini racked up 10 ground balls and five goals and one assist. A few of his goals came after winning a face-off and pushing transition on the Spartan defense.  As the Crusaders began to runaway with the game in the fourth quarter.  Skyline mounted a comeback behind senior midfielder Andrew Hankey, who finished the night with four goals and dishing three assists.  However, Skyline's defense continued to falter, but their offense kept up their hard-nosed play, blasting the Eastside defense.  Eastside scored three late goals nailing the coffin and cemented a 22-19 victory.

SCORING HIGHLIGHTS:  Eastside Catholic 22, Skyline 19 (Michael Rambladini, EC, 5 goals, 10 ground balls; Colin MacIlvennie, EC, 6 goals, 9 ground balls; Ross Komenda, EC, 5 goals; Colin Schriever, EC, 10 saves; Jack Pruitt, S, 4 goals, 2 assists, 8 ground balls; Andrew Hankey, S, 4 goals, 3 assists, 2 ground balls; Alan DeWeirdt, S, 4 goals; Cory Larson, S, 18 saves)

Sammamish Downs Redmond 10-3

By McNutty

A beautiful cold, clear February night greeted the crowd at Redmond stadium for a mid-April game between the Mustangs and Totems. First place in the Evergreen Conference was on the line and Redmond was looking for a little revenge for the 16-2 hurtin' Sammamish put on them three weeks prior. Youth and size characterizes both teams, as there was plenty of beef on the sidelines but not much facial hair.

Both teams were in mid-season form and the quality of lacrosse was good, as the two teams felt each other out at the opening whistle. Redmond's Brian Cox draws first blood beating Sammamish keeper Mitch Williams (4 saves) to give the 'Stangs a 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Brian Headland answers for Sammamish with his first of four goals on the night.  He quickly adds another with a backhanded flip into the cage to put his team ahead and the quarter ends with Sammamish up 3-1.

The 2nd quarter begins with Sammamish peppering the cage from all parts of the field. But Mustangs' goalie Nico Shewey stands tall in the cage rejecting the barrage of shots. Leaving the cage to deliver a big hit on an attackman receiving a pass 10 yds out, he prevents a sure one-on-one goal. Delivering long, accurate clears, he guides Redmond's middies to safe territory. Cox barrels his way through a nifty spin dodge and delivers a righty rip that stings 'Mish keeper Williams' shoulder and snuggles inside the pipe making it a 3-2 game.  Sammamish responds with two more in late in the half, which ends right as middie Tyler Wright delivers a spectacular bounce pass to Headland crossing in front of the cage. He buries it for a 6-2 halftime lead.

Both teams come out fresh in the 3rd quarter and Redmond controls the offensive tempo initially. But failed clears and missed ground balls start to avalanche on them. Sammamish pole Sam Chapman hoovers up ground balls left and right. Then Tyvan Schmidt sneaks a skipping-stone through Shewey's 5-hole and Ryley Martin adds one to make the 3rd quarter score 8-2.

Matt Young, excelling all night for Sammamish at the X, takes the opening faceoff down for an unassisted score. Shewey pulls out all the stops, dropping 70 & 75 yard dimes in an attempt to rally his offense. But the 'Mish defense remains steadfast, relinquishing only one 2nd half goal.  The game ends with Sammamish winning 10-3.

Certainly both these young teams will make noise in this year's D2 playoffs. Sammamish's powerful offense and athleticism will carry them past teams relying on only two or three horses. And look for Redmond's big-bodies to figure out their clearing game and follow keeper Shewey's leadership on defense.

Players of the Game (unofficial stats)

Sammamish

Brian Headland (4 goals)

Sam Chapman (13 ground balls)

Redmond

Nico Shewey (11 saves, 5 ground balls)

Highline Sneaks By Klahowya, 6-5

By X. Gardner

This game featured the first place team in the Olympic Conference, the Eagles of Klahowya (3-1), and the third place team in the Evergreen Conference, the Highline Titans (3-3). Klahowya was coming off a dominating performance over North Kitsap and a loss to D.I Tahoma. Highline stood on a record of 3-3, with back-to-back losses to North County and Skagit Valley. The Eagles were led by their big three; Kevin Bastien and Nick Johanson at attack, and Chris McGuire at midfield. Highline featured freshman lefty attacker Brenden Miller leading the way and midfielder Calabe Simpson up top. The opening face-off was won by Highline's Calabe Simpson and the Titans worked the ball around. After a couple minutes of moving the ball around, Highline struck first with a goal from and took a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, the Eagles responded with a goal from Johanson and knotted the game up at one a piece.

Starting the second quarter, Highline jumped out fast and put the Titans up 2-1 off a Larry Peneueta goal. After some great saves by both Klayhowa goalie; Nehemiah Salo, and Highline goalie Tanner Seramur, the scored stayed at 2-1 until the Titans broke the silence and extended their lead to 3-1. Starting the third quarter, the game started to become aggressive. The Eagles settled the ball and Jeff Haga buried the ball in the net to make it a 3-2 game. A save by Titans goalie Seramur set up a nice clear and Highline began to go to work again. Highline patiently worked the ball around and set up a nice pass to Dan Radoll to extend the lead by 2. The game progressively became aggressive, and a player from each team was thrown out of the game for fighting. That seemed to have gotten the Eagles fired up, as they put up two unanswered goals and tied the game up at 4 heading into the 4th quarter.

Both teams put in goals and the game was tied up midway through the fourth quarter. After some big saves by both goalies and some clutch plays by both defenses, Highline brought the ball down into Eagles territory. with just over 2 minutes left, Miller hit the eventual game winning left-handed bounce shot on the goalies off-side to seal a 6-5 Titans victory over the Eagles.  Klahowya's Nehemiah Salo had a season high 13 saves in net while Seramur recorded 7. Highline improves to 4-3 overall and next take on South Kitsap on Saturday. Klahowya drops their first league game of the year and next go head-to-head with Port Angeles on Wednesday.

Blancet Beats Roosevelt 11-5

By Jake Director

This week’s metro league matchup featured the Blanchet Braves (5-3) and the Roosevelt Rough Riders (2-4). Blanchet needed this win tonight to keep up with Garfield at the top of the Metro Conference. Currently, the Braves are on a three game win streak after beating Ballard 11-2 last Thursday.  Blanchet looks to build on their success and start rolling towards the playoffs. The Roughriders, led by Parker Williamson and Eli Harmon will need to maintain possession on offense and clear effectively in order to run with the Braves. The two teams met last in the season opener with Blanchet coming out on top 11-7.

The opening face off goes to Roosevelt’s David Hermansen and the Rough Riders settle into their settled offense. The first few minutes of play see both sides jittery as missed pass led to turnovers. Blanchet drew first blood as Zane Zielke got the feed on the crease and finished on a slow roller inside.  Schmutz takes the ball from behind and scores his first unassisted on a nice dodge wrapping around the crease. 2-0 Blanchet.  Seconds later Blanchet won the face and Schmutz got  another one.  Roosevelt needed to stop the bleeding, but freshman Matteo Schiro, a transfer from Bellevue, picked up the GB after a long scrum and pushed the fast break.  Blanchet is rolling. They are dominating face offs and time of possession as the Roughriders cannot seem to get any sort of settled offense.   Schmutz finished again and the score was 5-0 just minutes into the first quarter.

A couple of sloppily played minutes later, Roughrider’s David Hermansen took his defender behind and finally scored one putting Roosevelt on the board.  Roosevelt won the ensuing face off, but quickly gave up possession as one of their defenseman mistakenly lined up on the Braves 45-yard line. Whoops! The teams traded possession and penalties back and forth.  With less than a minute to play, the Braves settled on offense. The Roughrider goalie Kevin Ault made a save and quickly making an outlet to breaking attackmen Parker Williamson, who pushed the fast break and scored on a high bouncer with two seconds left in the quarter.

The second quarter began with a long possession from Blanchet, but they failed to capitalize on numerous looks. They appeared to have settled down and are not only doing a better job of making crisp passes, but force back to back “failure to advance” penalties on Roosevelt. Six minutes into the second quarter Roosevelt finally got the ball past the midline and quickly scored off an unsettled situation to bring the score to 5-3. While the Braves are clearly dominating the game and time of possession the Roughriders quietly put together a 3-0 run.

Right off the following face off Connor Black quickly answered unassisted on a hard bounce shot to the right corner. While having given up six goals, Ault made a number of quality saves to keep this game as close as it is.  Blanchet goalie, Zach Traynor also made nice saves.  The following five minutes of play see both Blanchet and the Roughriders exchange short possession with few scoring opportunities. David Vanderhoff beat Roosevelt’s Isaac Melkerson on a dodge from up top, bringing the Braves lead to 4 and ending the half 7-3. The Braves clearly controlled the first half dominating possession time but the rough riders remain in this game by capitalizing on the few opportunities they have. If the Roughriders can fix their clearing troubles and possession time they can make a comeback.

The Braves open the second half with a long possession, but no goals.  Roosevelt's Parker Williams fed Eli Harman bringing the score to 7-4.   Roosevelt seems only able to get possession off the face off. Their clearing game is killing them. With four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Schmutz returned the favor to Basset pushing the score to 10-4, resulting in a Roosevelt timeout.  After the timeout Roosevelt failed to get any scoring opportunities. Blancet got two more goals then Williamson scored to make the score 11-5 and is followed moments later by another Zielke Goal.

The next five minutes of the fourth quarter follow the same story.  Blancet locked up a 13-5 win.
