Postcards from the past: Seattle lacrosse team, 1905
Postcards from the past is an occasional feature, highlighting images from The Seattle Times historical archive. Posted by Heather Trimm.
The Seattle lacrosse team will leave this evening for Vancouver to play a championship league game tomorrow. This is the second time these two teams have met for championship honors, and the local team won from Vancouver on the home grounds on the Fourth of July.
The Seattle players are now in the best of condition, and constant practice every night has improved them wonderfully. The line-up will be practically the same as on July 4 and it is expected that they will be able to duplicate that performance and come home winners, although the Vancouver team is hard to beat on their home grounds.
The players who will represent Seattle and defend the maroon and khaki will be Jim McDonald between the flags, who played such a star game in Victoria, assisted by Lionel Yorke at point, who is one of the best players in the game today; Jeff O'Brien at cover point will give a good account of himself as he always does. O'Brien played a whirlwind game in Victoria last Saturday, making one of the most sensational plays that was ever seen on a lacrosse field, carrying the ball from centerfield and by a series of quick passes scored a goal, making it a tie when time was called.
Scotty Williamson, the stonewall defense man with the long reach, will be in evidence as he always is. Scotty played a sensational game in Victoria last Saturday and won applause by his sensational playing.
Jack Wallace, at center, is one of the fastest men in the game today. He is fast on his feet, a good stick handler and a valuable man, as he plays his position perfectly and covers lots of territory. Mike McCance at outside home, and Sam Hague, inside home, are both fast men.
Quite a few supporters are traveling with the team on this trip and will assist the boys in bringing victory home. ~ The Seattle Daily Times, July 21, 1905
