Bellevue lacrosse falls to Coppell, leaves Texas 2-1

COPPELL, Tex. – Sam Leggett’s 10 ground balls were not enough to shut down the powerful offense of two-time defending Texas Division II state champions Coppell as Bellevue fell to the Cowboys 13 – 6, Saturday at Lesley Field in Coppell. The loss was just the second this season for the defending Washington Division I champions and wrapped up a 2-1 spring break road swing for the Wolverines through the heartland of Texas.  Bellevue opened on Wednesday with a 10 – 4 win over Plano West and Friday dropped Highland Park 8 – 7. Leggett was among five Wolverines to score solo-shots, but none able to convert twice in the game played in unfamiliar confines of an 18,000 seat stadium with 90 degree heat and 30 mph Texas winds. In the first, Coppell opened scoring with Nate Hruby grabbing a deflected ball and beating Bellevue’s Austin Boyd.   Despite struggling to clear into gusting winds, Bellevue defenseman Blake Backer netted his first varsity goal just minutes later to knot the game at one goal apiece before the Cowboys finished the quarter up 4 – 2.  Both traded goals in the second with Coppell taking a 7 – 5 advantage into the intermission.  In the second half, the Cowboys finally broke loose scoring 3 in the third and another 3 in the fourth to cruise to the win. Bellevue (7-2-0) next faces Lynnwood (0-6-0), Thursday, April 14 in a 7 p.m. start at Meadowdale High School.

Issaquah squanders halftime lead, falls to Peddie in New Jersey 6-4

HIGHSTOWN, NJ –  Matt O’Neill scored 2 goals and goaltender O’Neil Hughes managed 10 saves, but Issaquah was unable to sustain a 3 – 1 halftime lead, falling to The Peddie School 6 – 4 in high school lacrosse action, Saturday in Highstown, NJ. The loss was the third of a spring break road swing through New Jersey for the Eagles.  On Wednesday, Issaquah fell 10 – 9 to Rutgers Prep in an overtime heartbreaker and dropped a 10 – 3 decision to Lawrenceville on Thursday before slipping again on Saturday. Despite the nearly impenetrable shroud of a zone defense, Issaquah managed to take advantage of a man up situation in the first as Duncan Hamilton snagged a Michael Hatcher pass on the high crease to take an early 1 – 0 lead.   With the keys to the zone finally in hand, the Eagles struck again with 30 seconds remaining in the quarter, as Ben Director grabbed a Matt O’Neill pass and fired it home for the 2 -0 advantage. Early in the second, O’Neill fired a riser on the Peddie keeper, hitting him square in the facemask, but still managed to put the ball into the to put the Eagles up 3 - 0.   Following a Peddie score late in the half, the Eagles took a 3 -1 advantage into the intermission. In the third, the Falcons rebounded to knot the game at 3 -3, before Issaquah again took the lead on a backdoor cut from Ashton Ritchie.   With just 11 seconds remaining Peddie again charged back to tie the game at 4 – 4 to set up a decisive final quarter. In the fourth, playing with a man advantage, Peddie finally struck for the lead and converted another shot just minutes later to make it 6 – 4.  The Eagles challenged with just minutes remaining in regulation, but they came up empty as their shots sailed past the cage.

Bellevue's Hustle and Flow Beats Highland Park, TX 8-7

By McNutty

The Wolverines faced four-time Texas State Champion Highland Park at Highlander Stadium on Friday night. Game time temperature hovered around 90 degrees and Bellevue came out hot as well. Blake Samuel ripped a 12-yard lefty to get the Wolverines on the board first. The Scots' offense, led by Rutgers-bound senior Campbell Sode, knocked off three quick goals to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Cole Johnson (2g) and Hank Bethke (3g) then caught fire in the first quarter ends tied 3-3.  The second quarter started with sloppy transition play by both teams. Nick Hudson netted one unassisted. Tommy Spengler deflected a pass on a hard ride and found Cole Johnson who buried it. Bellevue killed a couple of penalties and the half ends 5-3 in favor of the Wolverines.  The third quarter began with more scattered play. Bellevue gave up a man-down goal.  However on the next play Dakota Jones bulled through traffic and returns the favor. But the Scots bang home two more as the quarter ends tied 6-6.  With nine minutes left in the game, Spengler made another hard ride and Bethke intercepted  the short pass and puts it into the back of the net. Two quick penalties put Bellevue two men down. The defense tightened up and Austin Boyd (12 saves, 3gb) makes a big save as the penalties expire. Bethke intercepted another clearing pass and put Bellevue up 8-6 with six minutes to go.  The Scots score an EMO goal with 45 seconds left. Boyd makes a last minute save, then hurls the ball into the far corner as time expires. Bellevue wins 8-7.

On Saturday, the Wolverines face Coppell lacrosse club. The game can be viewed at http://www.icblivetv.com/show/coppelllacrosse.

Issaquah Falls to Rutgers Prep in Double OT 10-9

By The Man

An all-around solid high school lacrosse game between two quality teams, as Issaquah lost a heartbreak to Rutgers Prep, NJ in double overtime 10-9. Prep possessed the ball nearly the entire first quarter. Issaquah defense played outstanding, but failed clears kept giving Prep possession. Somehow Issaquah made the most of it's two minutes of possession and scramble plays at the end of the period to lead 3-1. It started with a fluke goal from Zach Fritz  with 2:32 on the clock. Kevin Powers scored his first with 0:29 left and Ben Director got his first with 0:02 left. In the second quarter Issaquah continued to shoot themselves, with failed clears from unforced errors. Playing too much defense began to catch up to the purple and gold and Prep began finish. Two goals for Rutgers Prep in the last two minutes of the half, both off simple backdoor cuts on the crease seemed to be back breakers. To make matters worse, Issaquah took a penalty with just 10 seconds left in the half. Starting man-down and tired in the 2nd half, things looked bleak for Issaquah, but they managed to kill the penalty and Powers second goal immediately after giving Issaquah life. Issaquah carried the momentum, Powers began winning face offs and Issaquah owned the quarter on back of two goals from Matt O'Neill to take an 8-7 lead into the fourth. Rutgers Prep regrouped and took back the lead with two goals in the first four minutes of the period. The rest of the period saw great defensive work from Issaquah's Aidan McDonald and Austin Richert to keep winning chances for Issaquah to equalize.

Prep's keeper made some big saves and a key turnover just outside of two minutes left gave Prep the ball back. As Prep tried to stall out the time, Issaquah ran the double to perfection as Richert and Lindor stripped the ball to earn Issaquah a final chance. With 20 seconds left, Matt O'Neill was able to dip inside for a shot, the keeper made a great first save but ended up on his seat and Director out back in the rebound to tie it with 12 seconds left. Issaquah won the next face.  Lindor came up with the ball and pushed to Powers. Powers drove and ripped a shot that found the back of the net but it was a second after the whistle- overtime.  In OT, Rutgers Prep had first possession. Aidan McDonald again came up big and helped Issaquah get the ball down to eventually win it and clear. Powers had the first good chance, but a great kick save sent the ball out of bounds on the sideline and Prep won the race. Jake Fritz came up with a huge strip on the resulting clear and won a second chance for Issaquah. With under 30 seconds left, Director ran past his man from top center and was able to get within ten yards of the cage, but was handcuffed as he attempted to get a shot off and the ball fell easily to the keeper. Prep cleared and called timeout with five seconds left, but was able to produce nothing- double overtime. In the second OT Prep managed to call timeout a split second before Issaquah stripped the face-off. The Eagles would never see the ball again. Issaquah stymied Rutgers Prep for a minute, but the winning goal finally came when Prep initiated from behind the cage.  A slight slip from an Issaquah defender gave the attackman a step and forced Issaquah to slide early. Prep was able to get a pass across the face of the goal to the back pipe for a low bouncer finish.

Mercer Island Beats Duxbury, MA 7-6 OT

Islander Connor Bernal scored the game winning goal in double overtime against the Massachusetts powerhouse Duxbury, giving the Islander a 7-6 win.  The Islander played well after their three game back-to-back-back games against Bellevue (8-6 win), King's Way (7-5 win) and O.E.S. (10-3 loss) last week.  Duxbury was the first of three games of the Islanders' New England spring break trip.  It was close throughout the contest with both teams tied at the end of the first half 1-1.  By the fourth quarter it was tied up 4-4.  Late goals pushed both teams into overtime.  With no goal in the first overtime, Connor Bernal found himself with the ball after a timeout and drove on his defender and scored the game winner.  Duxbury has won the past six of the past seven state titles in Massachusetts.
